About Special Area of Conservation: Maumturk Mountains

The Maumturk Mountains, located to the west of Lough Corrib in County Galway, Ireland, constitute a distinctive and ecologically important mountain range designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) under the EU Habitats Directive. Characterized by sharply ridged quartzite peaks, deep corries, and glacially sculpted valleys, the range offers a dramatic backdrop that extends approximately 25 kilometers from Maam Cross to Maumahoge. The SAC designation protects a variety of habitats including blanket bogs, mountain heath, alpine and subalpine grasslands, and transitional woodland. These habitats support an impressive range of flora such as heather, bog cotton, and rare orchids, as well as notable fauna including the protected Irish hare, several bird species like the peregrine falcon and merlin, and amphibians like the natterjack toad. The Maumturks are also culturally significant and are steeped in local folklore, adding an intangible heritage value alongside their natural importance. Hiking is the primary recreational activity, with the renowned Maumturk Challenge offering a strenuous traverse of the main ridge and panoramic views over Connemara. Visitors are attracted to the remote and wild character of the area which presents a true wilderness experience in western Ireland. Due to its ecological sensitivity, visitor access is encouraged along established paths to minimize disturbance. Other activities include birdwatching, photography, and seasonal nature appreciation. The SAC status ensures ongoing conservation efforts to maintain the delicate balance of the mountain ecosystems amidst increasing outdoor interest.
